“As
an artist, everyday there are images running through my mind. My
pursuit is to translate these images into art glass”.
Kathy Seff is a second-generation glass artist, learning from her
mother, Sandy Seff. Growing up around art glass, Kathy used to view
helping her mom with projects like doing the dishes, just another
chore to try to get out of! Little did she know her artistic
development later in life would be emphatically effected due to this
"chore".
"I
remember helping my mom to apply the copper metal to the glass. But
because I was always tinkering in the medium neither of us remember
what my first finished piece was. It's like not having baby pictures.
You can't see where you started. But, of course there is nothing that
I regret about starting so young."
At
first, Kathy didn't follow in her mother's footsteps. She took her own
direction in the arts and after completing college she started her own
graphic design firm. But all the while, she continued to help her mom
with drawing projects and executing some of the glass artworks her mom
was commissioned to create.
"Eventually the pull to work with my hands and have that feeling of
ultimate satisfaction from creating something that is tangible won out
over working on a computer monitor." Today, Kathy continues to move
forward in Art Glass, creating functional art like dishware, jewelry
and window hangings as well as aesthetic sculptures in various forms.
"Glass is such a versatile media. You can create and manipulate it to
the extremes, very large and very, very small. With glass it is also
possible to create in two dimension and three dimension. There aren't
many mediums out there that you can say that about. I couldn't imagine
being bored with glass!"
Although Kathy is still early in her career as a glass artist, the
glass art designs of Kathy Seff can be found in private homes and
business worldwide.
