To
me, the most important element of life is to live it fully and never
have regrets. Towards that end, I have taken every opportunity to
explore that which interests me and try my hand at that which
challenges me. When I come to the end of my days, I don’t want to have
any regrets or have to say “I wish I had just…….”.
For most of my life I have felt a creative, artistic pulse beating in
me, but I could not find the outlet that matched that pulse beat. My
daughter had taken a local mosaic class and upon seeing her final
project I thought “I think I can do that.” So, a few years later, in
1999, finding myself with extra time on my hands because my husband
was leaving for a one year tour in Bosnia, I decided to try my hand at
mosaics. So I started small, with a 2 by 3 foot table top!! I
miscalculated, wasted a lot of glass, cut myself more times than I can
count, had a disastrous but salvageable grouting experience… and yet I
was passionately hooked. Today that table lives comfortably in my
daughter’s garden.
By necessity I am self taught. I’ve learned entirely by trial and
error and continue to expand on my knowledge and techniques through
that same process. Ideas for my work come from being observant in life
and looking for inspiration in unlikely places. A handbag for sale at
a garden show in Newport, Rhode Island became the basis for a wall
hanging now in place at a home in Mexico. A combination of tile colors
often inspires a design. A unique piece of glass conjures up an idea.
I constantly collect odd little things I find interesting, knowing I
will one day use it in a mosaic. Often one of my finds becomes the
cornerstone of a piece.
Having one of my pieces find a home where it is truly enjoyed and
appreciated is just the final step in the amazing evolution of
creating a mosaic.
