Sandy Seff was always intrigued by
the colorful glass bottles decorating the window sills of her childhood
home in upstate New York. She is still fascinated with the intrinsic
beauty of glass and how it can be brought to life with the interplay of
various light sources. "Glass is at times a challenging media", she
admits, "but always a rewarding one to work in."
The first seeds of her creative
passion for glass were planted during Sandy's college years. A semester of
study abroad in Spain was enough for the abundant European art glass to
impress her with the enduring beauty of glass as an art form. That planted
seed would bloom later in life.
In 1989, Sandy began pursuing her
creative passion, art glass. Her husband claims she has managed to
compress a 40 year career into a 17 year time frame. When you see the
thousands of photographs of her work that are in locations from Italy to
Japan, his claim has some merit.
Sandy has enjoyed designing and
executing a wide variety of pieces - from functional stained glass and
etched glass windows, lamps, vases, mirrors, entryways for private homes
to a line of jewelry, to dishware, sculptures and garden art. Her array of
art and creations is continually expanding as she challenges herself both
artistically and technically. Her newest art uses a fabulous palette of
colors and textures of the American and European art glasses.
Sandy feels strongly that today's art
glass should have the same enduring quality that the old European art
glass had that so impressed her during her semester abroad. She
successfully achieves this with every piece that is handmade by use of
design and the impeccable quality of her craftsmanship. The combining of
artistry and engineering are essential to the longevity and beauty of art
glass.
Of all of the joys that Sandy has
experienced during her artistic journey - one of the most exciting and
rewarding has been being able to pass her passion on to the youngest of
her four children, Kathy. They now work together full time in their
studio, Colorful Visions Art Glass Studio, located in Bayport, New York.
Sandy and Kathy create an array of art glass that is for purchase in their
gallery as well as creating, what some have dubed, Long Island's finest
custom art glass.
